144-hour Visa-free Transit in Xiamen

Approved by the State Council, citizens with passports from 53 countries holding valid international travel documents and onward tickets with a confirmed seat to a third country (region) within 72 hours or 144 hours after arrival are allowed to transit via some Chinese airports without applying for Chinese visas.

Starting from Jan 1, 2019, Xiamen is carrying out the 144-hour visa-free transit scheme in Gaoqi International Airport and all sea ports within the city. The visa-free transit policy states that passport holders from the designated 53 countries are able to transfer in Xiamen for a layover not exceeding 144 hours on their way to a third country.

1、 Who are eligible for the 144-hour visa-free transit? - List of 53 Countries

  • Asian Countries: Japan, South Korea, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Brunei

  • American Countries: US, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile

  • Oceania Countries: Australia, New Zealand

  • Schengen Agreement Countries: Austria, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland

  • Other European Countries: UK, Ireland, Russia, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Belarus, Monaco


2、Areas Allowed to Stay

When using the 144-hour visa-free transit facility in Xiamen, the allowed areas to stay is limited to Xiamen City only, including the outskirts. Passengers are not permitted to visit any other cities in mainland China.

3、What Is an Eligible Route?

Departure Country A: → Xiamen → The Third Country C

Note: A and C refer to different foreign countries, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

It's the most essential thing to confirm that your route is eligible before departure. You are supposed to enter Xiamen from Country A, stay for not more than 144 hours, and then leave for Country C. During the period, you cannot stop over in any other mainland Chinese cities.

NOT Eligible: Singapore - Xiamen - Shanghai -Seoul

4、How to Apply for 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit?


6 Steps to Apply for 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit:

1.  Inform the carrier when boarding

2.  Fill an Arrival/Departure Card

3.  Apply for the 144-hour visa-free stay permit upon arrival

4.  Claim the luggage

5.  Go through the customs

6.  Leave the airport

5、What Documents Do I Need to Show?

1. Your passport with at least three months left

2. An air or cruise ticket to a third country with confirmed seat and departure date within 144 hours

3. A visa to the third country if required

4. The Arrival Card for Temporary Entry

Note: Visitors had better also prepare hotel bookings in case of immigration check.

Requirements and Notifications for Transit via Xiamen

1. Xiamen Ports of Entry and Exit for the 144-hour Visa-free Transit

Citizens of the 53 eligible countries can only apply for the 144-hour visa-free transit when entering and exiting via Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport(厦门高崎国际机场), Wutong Wharf (五通客运码头)and Xiamen International Cruise Center(厦门国际邮轮中心).

2.Duration of Stay in Xiamen.

The duration of stay as referred to in the 144-hour visa-free transit policy will begin from 00:00 o'clock the following day after entry into Xiamen. For example, if a 144-hour transit visa-free passenger enters at Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport today, starting from 00:00AM tomorrow, he/she is allowed to stay in Xiamen for 144 hours. The duration of stay will be specified on the temporary entry permit issued by the Chinese immigration inspection authority on his/her passport.

3.E-application System for 144-hour Visa-free Transit at Ports of Entry in Xiamen

Effective from 1st Jan 2019, passengers can use the E-application System for 144-hour Visa-free Transit to apply for visa-free transit via Xiamen in advance.
